Jülich Systems Analysis - Forschungszentrum Jülich

The research focus of Jülich Systems Analysis (ICE-2) is the unbiased, scientific investigation of technologies, technology paths, value chains and market ramp-ups in future energy systems, considering material requirements, sector coupling and framework conditions in policy and society.

The addressees are science, decision-makers from politics, industry and social actors. To answer the research questions, Jülich Systems Analysis creates complex models to analyze and evaluate technologies, infrastructures and resources for future energy systems using an open-science approach.

This is done in an interdisciplinary approach that considers the interaction of energy technologies with economic, ecological and social systems and thus focuses on security of supply, economic efficiency and environmental protection. An integral part of the research work is the creation of a consistent and sustainably usable data basis in accordance with the open data principle.

The team composed by Noah Pflugradt (Coordinator), Katharina Rieck (Member of the coordination team, modeling lead), Sumit Gargesh (AI metamodeling) is coordinating the project and leading the building modelling.

Bauhaus Earth

As a recognised research institution and non-profit organisation, Bauhaus Earth focuses on the transformation of the built environment. Founded in 2019 by renowned climate researcher Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Bauhaus Earth now has a 50-member team from the fields of architecture, climate science, sociology, urban planning, geosciences, engineering and applied timber construction. The institution works in a practical and hands-on way with industry partners to explore new forms and practices of building. In the in-house workshop, Bauhaus Earth translates research across the entire building life cycle into design and explores the application of bio-based materials from regional sources as well as reusable by-products of construction, industrial and consumer waste. The also serves as a space for visiting researchers to collaborate with us on experimental and creative projects and to present their work to the public. It’s a ready-to-use infrastructure for the fellows of our international Experimental Fellowship at Bauhaus Earth.

Within the project, Bauhaus Earth contributes key components to the sustainability analysis of RenoVisior. This includes providing data on bio-based materials and their climate-mitigation potential in the built environment. The work highlights the advantages of bio-based materials, such as reduced carbon footprint, renewability, improved indoor health through humidity regulation, enhanced thermal comfort, and benefits for building performance, including breathability and the prevention of condensation and structural damage.
The team is composed by Cristina Antonelli and Christiane Walter.

University of Deusto

Founded in 1886 as a higher education institution, the University of Deusto (DEUSTO) has an educational goal firmly grounded in academic excellence and social responsibility, aiming at generating economic sustainable growth and making positive contributions towards the construction of fairer and more inclusive and humane societies.

The University of Deusto contributes to the project by developing a mathematical model that links various characteristics of households and their occupants with the probability of accepting different renovations for their home or building. The model will consider not only technical-economic variables (such as building features or savings achieved through renovation) or demographics (age, gender, etc.), but will also integrate social factors (education level, income, etc.) and, most importantly, psychological factors (personality, beliefs, opinions, etc.).

FARAPI

Farapi is a small cooperative within the transformative social economy in the Basque Country. We design and facilitate participatory processes to transform society, as well as people, organizations, and communities. In the consultancy work, FARAPI combines multiple perspectives and areas of knowledge, including anthropology, feminism, participation, communication, and the transformative social economy. From the convergence of these diverse disciplines emerges the holistic and innovative approach. The cooperative supports processes that enable community-based responses to eco-social challenges, including areas such as renewable energy, food sovereignty, and sustainable local development, among others. Participation and community action are always both the premise and the goal of FARAPI’s projects.

In the RenoVisor project, Farapi’s role is to design and facilitate the co-creation process. On the one hand, we help place the knowledge of all members of the consortium at the service of the project; on the other hand, we analyze the experiences, opinions, and perspectives of key external stakeholders and citizens. Indeed, for the tool to be truly useful, the needs of potential users and their surrounding context must be taken into account. Oihane Beñaran Muñoz, Maria Ajuria and Ines Dinant are participating in this project, bringing their knowledge and experience in participation processes and community building into RenoVisor.

Energie Samen

Energie Samen is a national umbrella organisation for all energy communities in the Netherlands believing that the energy supply becomes better, fairer, and more sustainable when citizens gain more influence, and can actively participate. Energie Samen works toward a future in which sustainable energy is a common good: always available, affordable, and locally produced. In that future, energy cooperatives form the driving force behind local energy systems. We help our members obtain the right knowledge, expertise, and financing to realize that vision.

In RenoVisor, Energie Samen assists the pilots, in particular the Dutch Pilot, in developing their citizen-led renovation projects that will serve as test bed for the tools developed in RenoVisor.

Energie van Rotterdam

Energie van Rotterdam (EvR) is the umbrella organisation that brings together local energy cooperatives in Rotterdam. As a professional implementation body, EvR combines the strength of these cooperatives and provides them with a shared voice. EvR works towards a fair, clean, and local energy system that is owned and governed by the people of Rotterdam. In doing so, the organisation contributes to the energy transition: from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and from a centralised to a decentralised system. The core principle is that everyone can participate and benefit. Through cooperation and local ownership, residents across all neighbourhoods work together to make Rotterdam more sustainable. This is done through neighbourhood energy cooperatives, where members collectively own projects and make decisions about investments and revenues.

In RenoVisor, Lynn Vanheule from Energie van Rotterdam (EvR) is in charge of coordinating the installation and heat initiatives across the different energy cooperatives in Rotterdam. Moreover, support is offered to local initiatives by sharing knowledge, and connecting practical insights from neighborhoods back into the broader project, acting as a key linking pin between local practice and project-level strategy
