Building Understanding
for a Shared Renovation Plan
RenoVisor is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project supporting citizens,
homeowners and energy communities in making informed renovation decisions.
By combining social science, advanced building simulation and participatory advisory tools, RenoVisor aims to increase the building renovation rate and contribute to Europe’s decarbonisation goals.
The Challenge
Meeting EU climate and energy efficiency targets requires a major increase in building renovations. However, renovation decisions are often slowed down by limited access to clear and comparable information, complex technical and financial trade-offs, and difficulties in collective decision-making, especially in condominiums.
The RenoVisor Approach
RenoVisor addresses these barriers by developing three user-friendly tools that combine building simulations with behavioural and social insights, support individual and collective decision processes, and make renovation impacts, costs and benefits understandable to non-experts.
Tools that will be developed within the project
Single-Family House: support for homeowners
Multi-Family House: support for condominium decision-making
Energy Communities: support for districts and neighbourhoods
All tools consider technical, financial and social aspects and support multi-stage renovation planning following the efficiency-first principle.
Key Features
- Co-created with citizens and energy communities
- Accessible to non-experts and useful for professionals
- Cost, financing and payback estimates
- Climate-resilience and comfort insights
- Support for consensus-building and energy communities
- Focus on inclusion and reduction of energy and mobility poverty

How communication helps turn RenoVisor’s Research into real impact
When discussing European research and innovation projects, attention is often focused on technological developments, scientific findings or innovative digital tools. However, another element is equally important for ensuring long-term impact: communication and dissemination.
A Visual-thinking workshop explores how to integrate vulnerable groups in RenoVisor
Organised by COMILLAS within the Vulnerability Task Force, the session explored how vulnerable people can be better identified, engaged and supported through RenoVisor’s renovation tools and pilot activities.
Pilots and Impact
